Leo Tolstoy was a Russian novelist and moral teacher whose fiction and essays test claims about history, art, and Christian life. dissolves the historian's cult of genius and chance into the mass of small causes that move events. judges works by whether they infect others with sincere feeling and serve brotherhood. He renounced luxury. Later readers still measure both epic narrative and aesthetic theory against his severity toward war, class privilege, and false art.
