Plotinus taught philosophy in Rome after study under Ammonius in Alexandria. His pupil Porphyry arranged the lectures as the . Beyond Being stands the One, simple and ineffable; from it flow Intellect, Soul, and the sensible world by emanation. Reality descends in levels of unity. The soul's task is ascent by purification and contemplation toward union with that source. Augustine and the Christian Platonists take over the hierarchy and remake its summit as a personal God who speaks and commands.

Theology & Metaphysics
Being
Beyond Being is the One: ineffable source from which all reality flows.
